Portal

This past Thursday I survived what my friend Bri calls a “portal day.” The day before, I had to take Ila to a doctor’s appointment, had a coaching call (yes, I still work with a few people), caught up on email, and then met up with Jatee from Je T’aime Patisserie–one of our collaborators for the Women’s History Bakery Ice Cream Pint Series that launched on Friday. We were meeting up to make content for the series. I thought I’d have a moment to go home to change before heading to a Lunar New Year Dinner at Uncle Lou’s hosted by Les Dames d’Escoffier, but time was not on my side. I had to leave straight from the store on Broadway to Chinatown a little disheveled in all of my Sugar Hill Creamery gear.

It was at some point in the middle of making content with Jatee that I texted Nick something like, “We are not ready for tomorrow!! We should have prepped everything today but there were too many plates spinning.” We were wholly unprepared for the next day–the portal day.

At 9:30am on Thursday, I was scheduled to arrive at the WPIX 11 studios to promote our Women’s History Bakery Ice Cream Pint Series. The only thing was, Ila needed to be at the airport by 5am-ish for a track championship meet in Virginia Beach where I’d be joining her at 5:30pm that evening and I had nothing ready to go for the segment I’d not only I be featured in…I’d need to food style as well. My bag to meet Ila was only partially ready to go–the clothes were laid out but the toiletry bag had not been assembled and nothing had made its way into the suitcase.

On Wednesday night after coming back from the Les Dames dinner, I met with Nick to make a run of show for the next day, which had a call time of 4:40am latest. When I’ve had “portal days” that I didn’t realize were portal days in the past, granular-level planning always got me through. We walked through everything in 30 minute increments. I planned my outfit for the segment and all of the running around I needed to do before it, down to the layer. Every minute mattered that morning and I couldn’t be bothered with too many wardrobe changes. What I wore to the airport would need to be the base layer of my on-air outfit at 10:30am. I’ll save you the details of that morning, but everything got done seamlessly. I was pretty exhausted by the time I reached Virginia Beach but there were no hiccups.

I Googled, “What is a portal day” to better understand what I had experienced on March 5th. Turns out, these are an actual concept and not just one of my friend’s isms. The internet says that portal days are significant days where the barrier between physical and spiritual worlds is thinner, allowing more cosmic energy to reach Earth. Basically, these days act as either catalysts for the goals you are manifesting or a mirror to what you have been working on bringing to life. March 5th was both for me (and Ila). The first pint collab with Je T’aime Patisserie sold out. I was able to check off two goals on our Q1 company Goals bingo card. Ila medaled in both of her events on a national stage and I’m excited to see what’s next.

The day felt insane with all that needed to be accomplished between putting Ila on her flight at 5am and getting on mine at 5:30pm. I wasn’t sure how it was all going to get done. But, I just focused on the next step instead of getting overwhelmed by all the steps that followed. Now that I’m on the other side back in New York City from Virginia Beach, I await what’s next–bracing for potential chaos that results in great things ahead.
